About
A Visionary at the Intersection of Science, Technology, and Society
Daniela Rus is a globally recognized roboticist, computer scientist, AI researcher, inventor, educator, and entrepreneur whose work has helped define the modern fields of robotics and artificial intelligence. As Director of MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL), she leads one of the world’s foremost research centers in computing and AI where over 1600 researchers collaborate to advance the frontiers of computing and AI, along with applications that make the world a better place.
Her research develops the science and engineering of autonomy and intelligence, toward creating machines that can sense, reason, learn, move, and collaborate with people. Her work spans distributed robotics, self-reconfiguring robots, soft robots, autonomous vehicles, swarm systems, computational design and fabrication, Physical AI, and novel AI paradigms for efficient, adaptive, and trustworthy machine intelligence.
She earned her PhD in Computer Science from Cornell University. Before joining MIT, she was a professor in the Computer Science Department at Dartmouth College. Since becoming Director of MIT CSAIL in 2012, she has strengthened the lab’s culture of research translation, industry collaboration, and innovation at scale — helping create pathways for fundamental research to become real-world systems.
Across these efforts, she is guided by a powerful vision: to build intelligent, energy-efficient, and trustworthy systems that amplify human capability, accelerate discovery, and help address society’s grand challenges. Her work spans the frontiers of robotics and AI, from soft robots and autonomous vehicles to Physical AI, distributed systems, and novel AI paradigms designed for the real world.
Daniela’s impact extends beyond the laboratory through entrepreneurship, public service, mentorship, and thought leadership. A MacArthur Fellow and member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Sciences, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, she is committed to advancing AI and robotics with purpose, responsibility, and imagination. Her ventures — including Venti Technologies, The Routing Company, Themis AI, and Liquid AI — carry research from MIT CSAIL into technologies that improve mobility, strengthen trust in AI, and bring machine intelligence closer to where people live and work.
